The engines are running and we’re ready to roll!

Well… the day has finally arrived!  After a long stretch of work on client projects, the development team (Shinya and I) are finally able to put some time in on MakeFive. The list of cool new features and bug fixes that we need to work on has been growing steadily over the past few months, and I’m stoked that we’re finally getting to tackle a bunch of them. It’s funny how these things pile up when no one has time to address them as they’re added. (Kind of feels like waking up after a blizzard and finding your car buried under three feet of snow. All you can do is dive in and shovel as quickly as you can.)

One issue that I’ve been stressing a lot over lately is the Flash image uploader we use in the site. As a security precaution Adobe has decided to change some functionality in the upcoming Flash Player 10. Unfortunately this change renders useless the current method used for uploading files. Those of you who have already installed the beta release of FP10 will have likely already run into trouble uploading images on MakeFive, as well as numerous other sites. Many have been left scrambling to find a solution to this problem before Flash Player 10 is finally pushed out to the masses.

There’s a glimmer of hope though, as some very smart people here and here are working on ways to prevent this functionality from dying. We just hate to go back to the ugly “Browse…” button and inflexible input field that the standard upload methods afford. We’ll be keeping a close eye on developments over the next couple of weeks, and hopefully we’ll see a stable solution emerge.

In the meantime if you want to upload images on MakeFive I’d urge you to hold off on installing Flash Player 10.  :-)
